Midlife Crisis: Scratch By 50 - The Journey to Golf Excellence (2026)

As I approach my 50th birthday, I find myself embarking on a unique journey: a quest to improve my golf game and reach scratch status. It's a midlife adventure, a personal challenge, and a fascinating exploration of the game's intricacies.

The Journey Begins

Starting as a 13 handicap, I set an ambitious goal: to reach scratch within a year. Now, four months into this project, I reflect on my progress and the challenges I face.

My handicap has improved to 10.3, a testament to the incremental gains I've made. However, finding time for full 18-hole rounds has been a struggle. Work commitments and family responsibilities have taken precedence, a reality check for any mid-lifer with aspirations.

The Impact of Time and Age

One of the biggest challenges I face is time management. Unlike my younger days, I can't dedicate hours each day to the course. The demands of work and family life are real, and they often take precedence over my golf ambitions. This is a common struggle for many mid-life golfers, and it's a reminder that golf is a game that requires dedication and time, something that becomes a precious commodity as we age.

The Power of Practice

Despite the time constraints, I've managed to make progress. My swing feels more solid, and my game is improving. I attribute this to the practice I've been able to squeeze in, often in the form of nine-hole rounds. While these shorter rounds don't help my handicap as much, they provide valuable practice and a chance to refine my skills.

Short Game Success

One area where I've seen significant improvement is my short game. I've simplified my approach to shots close to the green, relying more on the bump-and-run, and it's paid off. I'm gaining strokes on scratch golfers in this area, which is a huge boost to my overall game.

Putting: The Great Challenge

However, my putting is a different story. I'm losing strokes, particularly within 10 feet of the hole. It's an area I've neglected, focusing more on my swing, but now it's time to address this weakness. I've reached out to my coach, Sam Hahn, for guidance, and he's offered a bold solution: a total overhaul of my putting stroke.

The Road Ahead

As I continue this journey, I'm excited to explore new strategies and tackle the challenges that lie ahead. I'll be documenting my experiences with a putting stroke overhaul, the potential benefits of using a cart instead of walking, and the impact of getting fitted for new clubs.

I'm also delving into the mental side of golf, a fascinating aspect that often gets overlooked. With my tendency to overthink and my head full of issues, this is a crucial area for improvement.

So, here I am, a quarter of the way through my project, and I'm feeling optimistic. Scratch at 50 is a realistic goal, and I'm determined to make it happen. Let's keep the momentum going and see where this journey takes me!
