RWE's Thor Offshore Wind Farm Construction Reaches Halfway Point: A Green Energy Milestone

The Thor Offshore Wind Farm project is making significant progress towards becoming Denmark's largest offshore wind farm. As of July 17, 2026, RWE has installed 36 of the 72 turbines, marking a crucial halfway point in the construction process. This achievement is a testament to the project's ambitious scale and the dedication of the RWE team and supply chain partners.

Each turbine, manufactured by Siemens Gamesa, boasts an impressive capacity of up to 15 megawatts. Standing at approximately 148 meters above sea level, these turbines feature rotor blades that extend an astonishing 115 meters long. This design not only maximizes energy production but also showcases a commitment to innovation and efficiency.

Tobias Keitel, Chief Technology Officer at RWE Offshore Wind, expressed his gratitude and optimism: "With every turbine we install, we move closer to delivering Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. This halfway milestone is a perfect opportunity to thank our project team and supply chain partners for their unwavering commitment and dedication, especially in challenging situations. Our focus now is on completing the construction work and bringing Thor into full commercial operation by 2027."

The installation process is facilitated by the Fred. Olsen Windcarrier vessel Brave Tern, operating from the Port of Esbjerg. The remaining 36 turbines will be installed by the end of 2026, with successful testing and full commissioning expected to be completed by spring 2027.

When fully operational, Thor will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. This is a significant contribution to Denmark's energy transition and a step towards a more sustainable future.

One of the standout features of Thor is its use of 36 carbon-reduced steel turbine towers from Siemens Gamesa, making it the first offshore wind farm in the world to adopt this technology. Additionally, 40 turbines will feature a total of 120 recyclable rotor blades, marking a pioneering step towards lifecycle sustainability for an offshore wind farm. This aligns with RWE's sustainability ambitions, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.

The Thor offshore wind farm is a joint project between RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%). RWE is responsible for construction and operations throughout the lifecycle of Thor, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated approach to the project.

As the construction progresses, the Thor Offshore Wind Farm continues to be a beacon of innovation and sustainability in the renewable energy sector. With the halfway point reached, the project is on track to deliver a significant boost to Denmark's green energy infrastructure, setting a precedent for future offshore wind farm developments.
